John Wooden, a legendary UCLA basketball coach once said, “Sports do not build character. They reveal it.” High school sports and extracurricular activities might be seen as another set of programs a school has to provide and pay for but for those athletes, it is so much more. These programs issue athletes with characteristics and traits that they are not able to get strictly from academics. Not only do they aid students to putting their very best into their academics but they also keep them from acting out.
They strengthen our ability to solve problems, deal with failure and success, along with working together as one. These programs give us character beyond the classroom. They can bring pride to a town and community. So many young adults are involved in substance abuse, drugs, and acting out in general. However, with sports, they distract us from these harsh realities. These programs guide us into being better people and using appropriate behavior.
High school sports and programs are beneficial to students due to the work ethic, structure, and noble characteristics we retain from them. Extracurricular and sports programs offer many opportunities for those who are involved. Certainly, transportation, uniforms, refereeing, and coaching can add up, it is definitely worth it to have these programs available. It is important to be involved and excel in activities beyond the classroom although it may pile up and overwhelm a student. Academics should always come first. It is not called an athlete student, it is a student athlete for a reason.
However, when it comes to education after high school, these programs offer structure, responsibility, and show a person’s capability to handle more than the average student. Student-athletes an. .ul mindset, it can help benefit their future as well. Whether it is the want to triumph and pursuing a career or engaging in a sport or program, programs in high school help build a person’s talent. Every student athlete has the honor to represent their community through sports and other extracurriculars.
The community should take pride in their students as well. They should also take pride in their students well-roundedness. Students are expected to do so much. Student-athletes have even higher expectations. They are expected to excel in their high school programs as well as excel in the classroom to maintain a GPA high enough for them to participate. These programs keep students from acting out and engaging in risky behavior.
All in all, there is more to high school than just academics. There is more to sports and extracurriculars than just keeping students “busy.”
